Business & Commercial Districts

Broadway & East 55th Historic District

The Broadway & East 55th Historic District is the “Downtown” of the Slavic Village neighborhood.  This large historic district is a wonderfully diverse, eclectic urban main street. Built largely between 1880 and 1930, the district holds a rich concentration of commercial building types and styles. Settled predominately by Czechs, the area was originally known as “Little Bohemia.”

Today the district is one of two intersections within the city of Cleveland that maintains pre-WWI buildings on all of its corners. This district is also home to more than 50 businesses and institutions. The vision for the redevelopment of the district is to build on the pedestrian-friendly street by attracting a variety of uses – quality retail, housing, restaurants, and public space.

Along with an exciting recently completed $9 million road and streetscape project, the Broadway Historic District is also home to the $7 million Boys and Girls Club of America facility and Cleveland’s first Rails to Trails project on a former 3-mile rail line that connects local parks with the Cleveland Metroparks Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation. With the designation of Broadway Avenue as a Scenic By-way, the ability to link the main street area to other greenway developments provides an exciting opportunity to market the district’s unique cultural and historical heritage.

Commercial properties available in the district include a mix of building styles ranging from architecturally significant storefronts to contemporary strip centers.  With convenient access to downtown Cleveland, Interstates I490 and I77 and accessible RTA bus and rapid transit routes, the Broadway Historic District offers a unique opportunity for businesses to locate here. North & South Broadway Business Districts

Broadway’s north and south commercial districts flank the Historic District and offer easy access to a wide variety of retail and service businesses. Broadway was designated by the City of Cleveland as a Business Revitalization District (BRD) in order to achieve quality designs for new construction projects and exterior renovations to existing buildings.

The district is home to a variety of businesses, including law and medical offices, financial institutions, social service agencies, clothing stores, furniture and appliance stores, hair and nail salons, motorcycle and auto parts stores, sales and repair shops. And with Broadway’s home-style diners, national chain restaurants, beverage and grocery stores you won’t have to leave hungry. There are also retail spaces available and ready to move in.

Exits from I-77 and I-490 make it easy for commuters to get to Broadway and recently completed bike/walking trails offer residents and visitors alike a healthy way to get around the area. So, whether you are driving, taking public transportation, walking or biking, you’ll find it’s easy to connect to Broadway’s commercial districts in Slavic Village.
