Slavic Village Starts a Skiing Club![]() A new club has formed in Slavic Village to promote the sport of cross country (CX) skiing, which experts call one of the healthiest forms of outdoor recreation. The club was formed to connect skiers with each other, to recruit new participants, and to showcase skiing opportunities within the neighborhood’s vicinity. CX skiers call their sport the perfect blend of relaxation and exhilaration. They ski when the great outdoors are at their moment of transcendent beauty. Medical studies confirm the sport’s great benefit to the cardiovascular system; though sliding on snow may appear and feel effortless, in fact skiers employ every major muscle group and burn calories on par with swimmers and rowers. Any chill in the air is offset by internal body heat generated from head to toe. On a more practical level, devotees say CX is less expensive and more geographically adaptable than downhill skiing. After the initial investment in equipment, the sport is essentially cost-free. CX can be performed alone or in a group, on a wide variety of terrains. Slavic Village borders the innermost strand of Greater Cleveland’s Emerald Necklace of Metroparks, one of the great metropolitan park systems in the nation. Within minutes are ample opportunities for residents to turn the dead of winter into one more season of active living. For more information on the Slavic Village CX Ski Club, call 216-469-4806. Needlework Artists Start Club in Slavic Village![]() Attendance is free and open to all ages. Needle crafters are invited to bring their knitting or crocheting projects to share with others. If you don’t know how to do either, local experts will be on hand to teach you how, with free lessons. Just bring your own needles or hooks, yarn and a pattern. They say the skills are relatively easy to learn and once mastered, become a fulfilling mode of self-expression for a lifetime. The club meets for the first time at 1pm this Saturday, January 10th at the new Americana Café, 3664 East 65th St., in the Warszawa Historic District near St. Stanislaus Church. While there, you can sample Americana’s selection of piping hot beverages, including a new hot beverage just for club members. For details, call 216-341-1440.
